TROJAN WRESTLING: Luft, Hagen advance to Class AA semifinalsST. PAUL — Worthington wrestlers Anthony Luft and Carson Hagen came to St. Paul seeking state championships Friday.
ST. PAUL — Worthington wrestlers Anthony Luft and Carson Hagen came to St. Paul seeking state championships Friday.
Both of them still have their dreams intact after the first day of competition at the MSHSL Class AA Individual Wrestling State Tournament.
Luft (36-1) and Hagen (31-5 at 195 pounds) each secured victories in the first and quarterfinal rounds Friday to advance to the state semifinals, which begin at 11:15 a.m. today.
At 120 pounds, second-ranked Luft had little trouble.
He cruised through a 14-2 major decision against Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton’s Dylan Wolff before posting a 16-1 technical fall over Princeton’s Timmy Bialka.
“I have the mindset of going out there and thinking I’m going to win by controlling the match,” said Luft, a junior, who faces Fergus Falls senior Tyler Giza (41-2) in the semifinals. “You have to push around your opponents and adjust to match. That’s where you can take control.”
Luft will attempt to control Giza, who is ranked sixth at 120.
At 195, 10th-ranked Hagen had to work to earn a pair of upsets. He knocked off Richfield’s Chandler Arredondo 4-0 before stunning Crookston’s Josh Edlund 4-3 in triple-overtime.
Arredondo had been rated seventh, while Edlund was ranked third at 195 heading into the state tournament.
“My coaches call me OT ... it’s become my nickname,” said Hagen, who faces Kasson-Mantorville’s Broc Berge (45-2) in the semifinals. “This is the sixth match I’ve won this season in overtime or later. I think I won seven or eight times in overtime or later last season. I’ve never lost in overtime.”
Tied at 2, Hagen and Edlund headed to extra time, where the first period went by without any scoring. Edlund escaped in the second overtime to grab a 3-2 lead, but Hagen knotted the match at 3 after Edlund was whistled for stalling.
“I came into the third overtime, knowing that I had to get out no matter what,” said Hagen, who took a 4-3 lead in the third extra session.
“(Edlund) won the flip and chose down to start the second overtime,” Hagen said. “I hadn’t held him down before, so he got out pretty quickly. From there, I used an underhook and I was really pushing on him. I could see that he was backing away because he didn’t like it. That’s where I earned the stalling point.”
Hagen will be attempting to defeat his third rated opponent at the state tournament. Berge is the top-ranked wrestler at 195.
Adrian Area’s Tony Lynn (126) and Jesse Slater (170) both won first-round matches, but were both defeated in the quarterfinals.
Slater remains alive in consolation round, while Lynn’s consolation result was not available before press time.
All of the other Daily Globe-area wrestlers lost first-round bouts and either dropped into the consolation brackets or were eliminated.
