WORTHINGTON — The Worthington Trojan gymnastics team received the Academic Team Gold Award from the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association Monday.
The award is given to teams who boast a 3.8 GPA or higher as a team during the season. The Trojans averaged a GPA of 3.826 amongst all their members.
Also being honored for their academic achievements were Stephanie Jaycox, Liz Hayenga and Claire Ludes, who all had GPAs of 3.8 or higher during the season.
Four Worthington gymnasts received honorable mentions on the All-State team for various events, including Liz Hayenga and Maria Contreras on the vault, Anna Koepsell on the floor and Paige Kinley on the floor, vault, bars, balance beam and in the all-around.
In order to be named to the All-State team for an event, scores from six competitions, including one tournament, are averaged, with gymnasts needing to score an 8.8 on the floor and the vault, an 8.5 on the bars and the balance beam. To be named to the team for the all-around, the gymnast must average a 34.3 in the all-around in the six competitions.
The Trojans also gave out team awards, with Carsen Wetzel picking up the Most Improved award, while Anna Koepsell received the Best Dancer award. Paige Kinley took home two awards, including the Best Tumbler award and the Most Valuable Gymnast award.
Worthington finished the season 5-1 in the Southwest Conference.
