ROCHESTER — The Minnesota West softball team opened up the season Tuesday, splitting a pair of games at the Rochester Dome.
The Lady Jays took on the Anoka-Ramsey Golden Rams in the early game Tuesday, picking up a 10-2 win in five innings.
Christine Kazemba struck out five batters and walked just two, while not allowing an earned run in five innings pitched to notch the win for Minnesota West.
The Lady Jays scored at least one run in every inning, but exploded for five in the fifth to take a 10-2 lead to invoke the eight-run rule, which ended the game early.
Kazemba also had a strong day at the plate, picking up two RBIs while going 2-of-4 with a double in the game.
Jes Hermeling was a perfect 4-for-4 in the first game, while scoring three runs and picking up three RBIs. Karti Suby also had a multiple hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Stephanie Behrens knocked in three runs and stole two bases, while hitting 1 of 3 on the day.
The Lady Jays took on the St. Thomas JV squad in their second game of the day, but were unable to score a run in seven innings, falling 7-0 in the contest.
Kazemba recorded the loss for MW to fall to 1-1 on the season. However, she allowed just four earned runs in seven innings and walked two batters.
Cheyenne Pantz (2-for-3) was the only Lady Jay with two or more hits against St. Thomas. Behrens went 1 of 1 in the game, while Alayna Hall went 1-for-3 with a steal.
Minnesota West is back in action Friday, March 22 when they travel to the Irish Dome in Rosemont.
