WHS Knowledge Bowl qualifies team for state

WORTHINGTON — The Worthington 1 Knowledge Bowl team of Worthington High School (WHS) emerged from Thursday’s Region 8 tournament at Southwest State University, Marshall, as repeat champions, thus qualifying for state Knowledge Bowl competition on April 11-12 in Brainerd.
Team members Thomas Burns, Alex Hayenga, Nathan Landwehr, Gordy Moore and Dillon Pedersen scored 113 points — including their best-ever total of 51 points in the written round— to clinch the top regional spot for a second straight year.
Region runners-up, who will join Worthington 1 in representing Region 8 at the state meet, were Mountain Lake 1 in second place with 103 points and Murray County Central 1 in third place with 94 points.
The other three WHS teams finished as follows: Worthington 2, 13th place, 72 points; Worthington 3, 17th place, 65 points; and Worthington 5, tied for 29th place with 49 points.
In all, 33 teams participated in the Region 8 showdown. Other schools fielding teams Thursday included Marshall, Redwood Valley, Adrian, Pipestone, Hills-Beaver Creek, Minneota, Windom, Tracy, Fulda, Springfield, Murray County Central, Jackson County Central and Westbrook.
