LUVERNE — The annual spring ice show, “Extra! Extra! Skate All About It!,” returns for its 22nd year with two nights of performances by members of the Blue Mound Figure Skating Club on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Blue Mound Arena in Luverne.
Seventy-two skaters between the ages of four and 33 will come from as far west as Hartford, SD, and as far east as Round Lake to skate in the spring ice show. Other skaters in the show represent the communities of Adrian, Brandon, Garretson, Jasper, Kenneth, Lismore, Reading, Sioux Falls, Steen, Valley Springs, Worthington as well as Luverne.
Along with the Learn-to-Skate skaters, the show will include 21 dads skating in the Father-Daughter number as well as eight hockey players who will skate with a figure skater in the always popular Hockey Player – Figure Skater number.
The skaters will be performing in group numbers as well as three different synchro-teams: Blue Gems, Blue Diamonds, and Sapphire Edge.
The Blue Mound Figure Skating Club is graduating one senior this year in Dana Kingery from Reading. She will perform her senior solo at the spring ice show.
Ten other soloists will show off their stuff, while four skaters will be skating a step out solo with a group of younger skaters. The show also features five duets and three trios skating that which will perform both nights.
This year’s music selection contains a variety of songs that fit in with the newspaper theme of the show. “The Newsies” open the show with a big production number, while “Brother For Sale” will be in the “for sale” section and an advertisement for a Disney vacation will be performed by the Mickey Mouse Club.
Five instructors worked hard with the performers to get the numbers ready for this year’s show, including Courtney DeBoer, Katie Kopp, Sara Nuffer, Cathy Shearer, and Sabrina Sowles. Except for Shearer, the other instructors all graduated from Blue Mound Figure Skating.
The club will be selling flowers for parents and friends who wish to congratulate their skaters with flowers after the show.
A gift drawing will be held for both shows to help raise funds for the club. The winner will be announced following each show.
This year, the Blue Mound Figure Skating Club will not be honoring its competitors at the beginning of each show, but will instead have a skating exhibition, banquet and awards night Sunday, April 14, starting at 4 p.m. the exhibition is free and open to the public and will feature a performance from each competitor.
