TROJAN TRACK: Worthington sweeps Early Bird

SLAYTON – Displaying remarkable depth and winning a total of 15 events – eight in girls’ competition and seven in the boys’ meet – Worthington claimed both team titles Friday at the season’s first outdoor high school track and field meet, hosted by Murray County Central.

BLAST: Edgerton wins District 8 in 1963

EDGERTON – A week ago, Southwest Minnesota Christian High School, based in Edgerton, won its fifth Class A boys’ basketball state championship. After a runner-up finish in 2012, the Eagles – who won four straight titles from 1999-2002 – capped a remarkable 30-1 season with a well-played 81-73 victory over Maranatha Christian Academy of Brooklyn Park in the first of four championship games at Target Center.

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Eagles rally to defeat Mustangs in state finals

MINNEAPOLIS — For the fifth time in school history, Southwest Minnesota Christian — based in Edgerton — is the Class A boys’ basketball state champions. Playing at Target Center Saturday, the Eagles rallied from a seven-point second half deficit to claim the title with an 81-73 victory over Maranatha Christian Academy in a very well-played championship game, which featured 14 lead changes and was tied four times.

MINNEAPOLIS — Soaring to early leads of 7-0, 16-4 and 25-8, the Southwest Minnesota Christian Eagles flew out of the gates in impressive fashion Thursday afternoon at Williams Arena and advanced to the Class A semifinal round of the 2013 state boys’ basketball tournament with a 68-38 victory over Section 8A champion Walker-Hackensack-Akeley in the last of four quarterfinal games.

MINNEAPOLIS — Finishing the game on a 23-10 burst Thursday afternoon, the top-seeded Maranatha Christian Academy Mustangs snapped open a close contest against Section 2A champion Mountain Lake Area in the quarterfinals of Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Class A boys’ basketball state tournament, advancing to the semifinals with a 61-44 victory over the Wolverines at Williams Arena.

WORTHINGTON — Silverberg’s was selling Minnesota Twins’ youth jackets for $3.99 (sizes 3 to 6x) and sizes 8-16 were priced at $4.99, Schafer’s Grocery was selling three pounds of hamburger for $1.00, a two-pound can of Butternut coffee for $1.15 and nine cans of Campbell’s Tomato Soup for 99 cents, a single issue of the afternoon edition of the Daily Globe was 10 cents and “West Side Story” was showing at the State Theatre in Worthington.
