Column: The many, many uses of brown paper bags

WORTHINGTON — I was sitting in the car on a supermarket parking lot waiting for a friend. A man came out, and it appeared he was eating a Twinkie. That could not be, of course. No more Twinkies. I decided the man was eating something from the bakery.

Column: Being the Turkey Capital was hard work back in the day

WORTHINGTON — It will be Thanksgiving almost before you know it — Thursday. I was reading that “America’s Thanksgiving menu is becoming more varied.” There will be many steaks grilled for Thanksgiving. Pork chops

Column: Candidates often have focus on the wrong issues

WORTHINGTON — At last, at last the elections have come and gone. I tried to follow all that was going on. The Daily Globe said citizens should keep themselves informed, and I took that seriously. I listened to Tim Pawlenty and Newt Gingrich. My — that was a long, long time ago.

Column: There was a lot to talk about at old social clubs

WORTHINGTON — Take notice of those second stories of Worthington’s downtown buildings. Most of them are abandoned. No one goes there. No one wants to climb stairs. A century ago, those second level lofts were the center of Worthington’s social life.

Column: As Halloween approaches, an eerie holiday tale

WORTHINGTON — That evening haunted by ghoulish, ghostly, ghastly tales is nearly upon us once again. The eve of All Saints Day. The hallowed evening.

Column: A micropolitan area that's on the rise

WORTHINGTON — You feeling pressure? That’s because we’re growing. Not a lot. The figure is .09 percent from the time the 2010 census was taken until last Dec. 31.

Column: You got mail - at least you did back in 1934

Archeologists poking around Worthington one day may puzzle at the names they find carved in stone in the ancient Turkey Capital. Henry Morgenthau Jr. and James A. Farley. If these names puzzle you, check the cornerstone for the stately old Worthington post office building at the corner of 11th Street and Third Avenue.

Column: Stop horsin' around and read this column

WORTHINGTON — There was a television special on horses lately. Part of it focused on men and horses together in wars, from the steppes of Asia to the Great Plains of North America. Men of all races rode horses into battle — Ghengis Khan, Julius Caesar, George Custer, Crazy Horse.

Column: Jay Day was an extravaganza while it lasted

I was reviewing accounts of Wendell Willkie’s visit to Worthington. 1940. That was one of the years Worthington Junior College (Minnesota West) was still attempting an annual Jay Day celebration.

Music men: Community pays tribute to WHS Legacies -- Gerald Niemeyer

There is news of sorts along the streets of Worthington every day. A baby is born. Someone has died. Shocking news — news beyond imagining — is rare. There was news of this magnitude late on a Friday afternoon in 1961 — Nov. 7, 1961. Gerry Niemeyer and his wife, Iva, were both dead, killed in a car collision at a rural intersection near Fairmont, which was Niemeyer’s boyhood home. The work week was ended, the weekend had begun.
