Another nerve hit. No one's forced away from here, they're drawn away. Oh, and I hear your angst. I have it, too...just for other reasons. We're off-topic from Manna, so to get back on: For every future anti-immigration rant/post I read on this Manna Article that offers no thoughtful, constructive solution to the "problems" discussed, I'm donating $20 to Manna Food Pantry.

Just stand on your head, close your eyes and don't stray from your bubble. Everything will be fine.

Hmm...apparently something I said hit a nerve. There's a reason why. Donations to all groups Lisa mentions are wonderful, needed, appreciated, and a great example. Yes...'saving' the town from complete desertion for whoever wants to call Worthington home. My observation is that cities draw a majority of young people away from most small towns once those people reach a certain age. And given the older demographic of the area, that threatens economic viability down the road. The business and industry momentum (that I see, at least) among documented US citizen business owners and their families will prevent Wgtn (and small towns like it) from becoming a ghost town in the future. If such momentum continues, it will encourage more young people to stay/relocate here. Someone with actual numbers could confirm or deny my observation. I personally delivered 14 lbs of food to Manna in October - the efforts of 6 (SIX) preschoolers learning about service to those in need. I saw no wealth, joy, or hope in the faces of the people in line I saw that day. That's my experience.

I, too. will give directly to the people I know need it. I have driven by the church and have seen some coming out with sacks of free food and then going through the sack and taking out what they want and leaving what they don't want on the ground and drive away. Now, if they are in such need of free food, why would they do that?

Okay, TP, how are they saving our small towns? The moderator removed my previous response to you, apologies moderator, I was not intending to personally attack anyone. I'd really like this question answered by you TP, what have they done to enhance life in our small towns? And, to answer your question about how many I help? In the past year I've donated to: domestic abuse programs, hockey programs and other youth sports, the VFW and American Legion, Salvation Army, DARE, Police Chief's Assn.. I think there's more but I can't recall them off the top of my head.

That's pretty funny TP. Who are the immigrants saving the small towns for? Other immigrants? The immigrants actually caused an exodus out of towns like Worthington of the original inhabitants. I personally know people who move out of Worthington because of what happened to the town. I would guess J A that people donating to the food pantry would expect you to sell your newer vehicle and live off the proceeds of that before going to the food pantry to take from their donations.

I would have to strongly agree with Elroy. I have seen exactly what he is talking about first hand. I myself am a single parent with a full time job house payment and all the bills that go along with having children (i have two). I drive a crappy old car but it's paid for and i have to pay all my bills, daycare groceries ext.. and I to often wonder how the people with out jobs getting food stamps and going to the food shelf can afford such nice vehicals and walk around talking on there new blackberry phones. Either they are scaming the system or they really spend there money foolishly. Either way I'm not going to be the one helping them out. I like Elroy will help people out directly.

Call me cold, but we have enough of our own starving - - - And, Lisa, just how many of 'our own' are you helping to feed that you have no time (or empathy) to serve others? Probably not very many. All you people blowing steam have turned this topic into an anti-immigration rant. Wake up! Immigrants are SAVING your small MN towns that are otherwise dying. Truth hurts. If you're in such pain that you've lost empathy, and feel threatened by every little alleged assault on your pocket book, then take it to a personal counselor to help work through your issues. There are people who can help you accept your pain and deal with it constructively.

So because I drive a 'newer' SUV, that means I don't deserve to get help when I need it?! The vehicle I drive doesn't prove that I don't live paycheck to paycheck and sometimes get down on my luck and couldn't use some help feeding my kids.
