Josie Schaap was born on October 14, 1913 near Kanawha, Iowa, to John and Anna (Eekhoff) Rozeboom. She attended school there for half a year before moving to Minnesota in 1919. She grew up on farms in the Edgerton area, attended country school and graduated from the 8th grade.
