Colorfully painted teepees, flags and ceremonial staffs decorate the landscape in Flandreau, S.D., in preparation for this morning’s “Legacy of Survival” welcome-home walk from Flandreau across the state border to the Sacred Quarry at the Pipestone National Monument. The staff shown bears 38 eagle feathers, as well as a tanned triangle of hide with the names of the 38 Dakota Sioux that were hung for their part in the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 in the largest mass execution in American history. Ceremonies are planned beginning with the 8 a.m. walk, a stop at the border and events following at the National Monument in Pipestone.
