Helen M. Van Maanen, 93, was born on May 5, 1915, in Slayton, MN, to Oscar and Ellen (Smestad) Lucker.
Helen M. Van Maanen, 93, was born on May 5, 1915, in Slayton, MN, to Oscar and Ellen (Smestad) Lucker. She attended District #35 School in Lime Lake Township and graduated from Slayton High School in 1931. Helen then attended Business College in Minneapolis, MN, and returned to employment in Slayton until 1944, when she moved to Worthington, MN. On September 8, 1946, she was married to John K. Van Maanen and moved to Rushmore, MN. There they owned and operated the Rushmore Hardware Store until 1961 when they moved to Worthington. Helen retired from employment with Worthington Medical Center in 1975. She and John wintered in Texas for 14 years where they enjoyed gardening and crafts. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Worthington since 1946. Helen passed away on Friday, January 9, 2009, at the Crossroads Care Center in Worthington.
Helen is survived by two sisters-in-law, two nephews, and four nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; a sister, Minnie, and two brothers, Mihlon and Clarence.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 12, 2009, at 10:30 a.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with the Rev. Richard Ricker officiating. Burial will be held in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Rushmore, MN.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
