Obituary: Melvin Kirchner

Melvin passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at the Worthington Regional Hospital at the age of 77.

Melvin Kirchner, the son of Frank and Winifred Odenbrett Kirchner, was born on August 14, 1931 near Fulda, MN. He grew up on the family farm near Kinbrae and lived there with his parents and farmed for many years. Melvin did custom corn shelling and hay baling for area farmers. He continued to live and farm at home after his parents passed away. Melvin spent the last three years with a very special and caring family, Franklin, Jeannie, Pam and Brian Kunze on their farm near Worthington. Melvin passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at the Worthington Regional Hospital at the age of 77. He was a member of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Fulda and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved farming and driving around the area to look at the local crops. Melvin also enjoyed playing checkers and listening to Polka music.

Survivors include his sister, Margaret Wieskus of Jackson, MN; three nieces, Barb (Jeff) Christensen, Mary (Mike) Giese and Janice (Lee) Freeman all of Jackson; grandniece, Heather (Robert) Wood of Jackson; six grandnephews, Brandon and Cody Christensen of Jackson, MN, Matthew Giese of Blaine, MN, Justin (Katy) Giese of Alexandria, MN, Jake Giese of Jackson, MN and Lucas Freeman of Jackson, MN and special friend, Pam Kunze of Worthington, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Leonard Wieskus.

Funeral Services: St. Gabriel’s Church Fulda, MN at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 17, 2009 with the Fr. Larry Brixius celebrating. The organist is Mary Ann Boom. The song leader is Sheila Crowley. The pallbearers are Brian Kunze, Duane Kirchner, Brandon Christensen, Lucas Freeman, Jake Giese, Heather Wood and Franklin Kunze. Interment at St. Gabriel’s Cemetery Fulda, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. The Totzke Funeral Home in Fulda is assisting the family with arrangements.
