Obituary: Gary Kruse

Gary Kruse passed away Thursday, April 15, 2010 at his home in Windom.

Funeral Services for Gary Kruse, age 67 of Windom will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 19, 2010 at the American Lutheran Church in Windom with the Rev. Terry Frovik officiating. Burial will follow at the Memory Gardens Cemetery in rural Windom with full military honors.

Visitation will take place on Monday for one hour prior to services at the church in Windom.

Gary Dennis Kruse was born on August 9, 1942, in Heron Lake, Minnesota to Elmer and Lorraine (Appel) Kruse.

He was baptized on September 1, 1942, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Okabena and later confirmed on May 20, 1956, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lakefield. Gary received his education in the Lakefield Public Schools; graduating from Lakefield High School in the Class of 1960. He then enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country until being honorably discharged in 1963 and then returned to Lakefield.

On December 28, 1965, Gary was united in marriage to Marie Tusa in Lakefield, Minnesota. This marriage was blessed with three children, Karin, Shelley and Kelly. Later, this marriage was dissolved. On February 22, 1985, Gary was united in marriage to Diane Denise Hussong at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lakefield.

After marriage, Gary and Diane lived in Lakefield for a short time before moving to Windom. Through the years, Gary worked for Scheppman Construction, the Jackson County Highway Department, was self-employed for several years in which he provided painting, lawn care, snow removal and maintenance services. He then worked for ten years at the United States Postal Service before retiring in 1997.

On Thursday evening, April 15, 2010, Gary passed away at the age of 67, at his home in Windom after a courageous battle with cancer.

Gary was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Windom. He had many enjoyments in life which included playing cards, spending time with his pet cats, fishing, bird watching, golfing, watching the Minnesota Vikings and Twins, flowers, collecting coins, baseball cards and stamps.

Gary is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Diane Hussong of Windom; mother and step-father, Lorraine Kruse Carlson and Ed Carlson of Lakefield; three children, Karin Kruse of Ft. Dodge, Iowa, Shelley Glaser of Okabena; Kelly Kruse of Lakefield; four step-children, Denise (Dallas) Morris of Jackson; Pat Kunerth (Denise) of Lakefield; Rodney Kunerth of Lakefield; Dennis (Rhonda) Kunerth of Lakefield; three grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one step-great-granddaughter; one brother and one sister, Larry Kruse of Lakefield; Kathy (Kenny) Kuehl of Redwood Falls; several nieces and nephews; and two special cats, Lady and Fluffy.

Gary is preceded in death by his father, niece and nephew, Kristel and Kelsey Kuehl; mother-in-law, Inez Hussong; son-in-law, Derick Glaser; and special cat, Fergie.
