Obituary: Fern Soderholm

Fern Soderholm, 88, was born to Hjalmer O. and Selma Johnson Soderholm on December 13, 1921 at their farm in Elk Township.

Fern Soderholm, 88, was born to Hjalmer O. and Selma Johnson Soderholm on December 13, 1921 at their farm in Elk Township. She attended Prairie Hill District #29 and Worthington High Schools. She graduated with a B.S. degree from the University of Minnesota and a M.S. degree from the University of Wyoming, both in Home Economics Education. She did 2 years of extension work in Rock County, followed by her teaching years in Luverne and Willmar. She lived in Willmar 44 years, then moved to the Maple View Estates in Fulda, and most recently resided at the Meadows in Worthington. She was active in Willmar and Worthington Covenant Churches, WCTU, 4-H and other organizations where she served as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, Ruth and Dorcas circle member, officer and worked with teenagers group. She was a member of the First Covenant Church in Worthington where she was baptized and confirmed. Fern died on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at the Sanford Medical Center in Worthington, MN.

Fern is survived by her sister, Gloria Frederickson and a sister-in-law, Opal Soderholm. She enjoyed 16 wonderful nieces and nephews, 33 great nieces and nephews, and 21 great great nieces and nephews. Her wish is to meet them all in heaven. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Garvin and Leland, a sister, Violet Hill, and a nephew, Alan Soderholm.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 10, 2010, at 10:00 a.m., at the First Covenant Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor John Stewart officiating. Burial will be in the Worthington Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 10, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., at the First Covenant Church in Worthington.

Memorials are preferred to the church or donor’s favorite organization.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.

My daughter Joyanne received The Fern Soderholm scholarship in 2002. We had the opportunity to meet Fern and take pictures with her. Her love for education has outlived her life in the many people she impacted, including my daughter. Thank you. God comfort you all. Lynda Johnston
