Obituary: Mervin J. Metcalf

Mervin J. Metcalf age 75 of Cologne passed away on Saturday October 15, 2011 at his home.

Mervin J. Metcalf age 75 of Cologne passed away on Saturday October 15, 2011 at his home.

Memorial Service held on Friday October 21, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia with Rev. Steve Anderson officiating; visitation 1 hour prior to the service; Interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Mervin was born on December 25, 1935 in Cottonwood County, MN the son of John and Hatty (Flatabo) Metcalf. The Metcalf family was surprised with a second baby, his twin sister Muriel.

Merv attended the “Red White and Blue” county school and onto Heron Lake High School graduating in May 1954.

Merv joined the Army National Guard in February 1954 and transferred his service to the Navy, where he was active from January 1955 until January 1959, serving in Guam and Japan.

After returning home from the service, Merv helped his father on the family farm and then moved to Minneapolis with friends. Merv met and married Carol VanDenEinde in January 1960. They had two children Brent and Cheryl.

Merv later met and married Patricia Weinzierl in December of 1994.

Merv worked for Eaton Corporation for 38.5 years, retiring as a Department Manager.

Merv enjoyed fishing with his children, and later with his buddy John Galvin, wife Pat and best dog Reba Rose.

Merv really enjoyed watching and going to the movies. He also enjoyed traveling, taking family vacations to New York and California. Later in life Merv very much enjoyed overseas travel, traveling to Europe, England, Ireland and the Orient.

At first Merv did not want a computer in the house but soon loved it. He would read his local home town paper and others keeping up on family and events. With the help of the computer, he was able to locate several dear friends from his Navy career. They have remained friends.

Merv was a member of the Waconia American Legion in Waconia, MN.

Anyone knowing Merv also knew how much he loved his dog Reba Rose. She went everywhere with him, he would take her fishing and visiting with family and friends.

Merv will be missed by his family and friends…Good Bye My Love!

Merv is preceded in death by his parents, John and Hattie Metcalf; brothers and sisters Melvin Metcalf, Jonette “Tootsie” Jeppesen, Evelyn Gilson, Darrell Metcalf, and Robert Metcalf.

Merv is survived by his loving family; wife, Patricia “Pat”; son and daughter-in-law Brent and Janel Metcalf of Woodbury; daughter, Cheryl Metcalf of West St. Paul; step-children and spouses, Kris and Kristina Froyum of Shakopee, Pierce and Krystle Harrington of Shakopee, Mathias Weinzierl of El Paso, TX; grandchildren, Thomas Walk Jr., Michelle Walk; step-grandchildren, Annika Froyum, James Froyum, Levi Froyum, Alya Harrington; twin sister, Muriel Kipfer of Avoca; sisters-in-law Joell Metcalf-Horak of Wausau, WI, Lorraine Metcalf of Sarasota, FL, Elsie Ridell of Westbrook; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Honorary Casket Bearers, Gary Jeppesen, Douglas Metcalf, Bryan Kipfer, Mathias Weinzierl, Kris Froyum, Pierce Harrington.
