Richard E. Koeneke, 89, was born in Buffalo Center, IA, on November 25, 1922. He entered the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, MN, on January 9, 2012, where he died on May 21, 2012.
Richard E. Koeneke, 89, was born in Buffalo Center, IA, on November 25, 1922. He entered the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, MN, on January 9, 2012, where he died on May 21, 2012.
Richard graduated from Worthington High School. He served in the 86th Infantry Division, 241st Regiment. He served in Germany and the Pacific Theater from August of 1945 through January of 1946. He was a member of the American Legion for more than 50 years, serving as Post Commander and a member of the Color Guard. Richard owned and operated Worthington Sheet Metal for many years. He married LaVonne Olsen and they were later divorced. They remained very good friends. He was an avid hunter and loved fishing with his friends.
Richard is survived by four sisters, June Anderson (Eugene) of Sauk Centre, MN, Ruth Heidebrink (Orville), Leila Janssen (Jerry) and Leola Weets, all of Worthington; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Koeneke; his mother, Hilda Koeneke; his sister, Corinne Koeneke; and his brother-in-law, Fred Weets.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2012, at the Benson Funeral Home Chapel in Worthington, MN, with the Rev. Gordon J. Orde officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2012, at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
