Marie Agnes McCarvel, 85, was born April 16, 1927, at home near Westbrook, MN, the daughter of John and Wilhelmina (Habeck) Salentiny. She married Joseph Michael McCarvel on September 1, 1948, in Dundee, MN.
A lifelong homemaker, she was a partner in the family farm with her husband Joe. They moved to Hersey Township in Nobles County to begin farming after their marriage where they raised their family on a grain and livestock farm. Marie was known to drive a tractor or truck on occasion to help with the field work. She raised chickens and sold eggs locally, and took care of the bottle lambs in the spring.
Marie was well known for her cooking, providing lunches during field work and meals for her family. There was always enough for one more should someone stop by. Cookies, pies, bread and roast beef were some of her specialties. She loved spending time with her family, baking, gardening, sewing and quilting. She liked to play cards, checkers, and Chinese checkers.
Marie was active in the community and was a member of the following organizations: Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Ladies Guild, Past Tri-49’rs 4-H club leader, Nobles County Extension Homemakers Club and was named Nobles County Farm Family of the Year in 1984.
Marie died on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at the Sogge Good Samaritan Center in Windom, MN.
Marie is survived by five children, Mike (Bev) McCarvel, Brewster, John McCarvel, Windom, Bonnie (Jim) Nagel, St. Louis, MO, Thomas McCarvel, Bloomington, MN, and Ronnie (Julie) McCarvel, Brewster; eight grandchildren, Paul & Angie McCarvel and their children, Alexis and Emily, Tea, SD, Dan & Hillary McCarvel and their children Alex and Mikayla, Shakopee, MN, Lisa & Ryan Hanson and their son Blake, Andover, MN, Taylor, Logan and Abby McCarvel, Brewster, MN, Brian & Sarah (Nagel) Guilfoyle and their son Cole, St. Charles, MO, and Courtney Nagel, St. Louis, MO, and one brother, Joe Salentiny, Dundee, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe in 2011, an infant daughter, Judy Marie, her parents, brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence & Blanche Salentiny, and sister-in-law, Alice Salentiny.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster, MN, with Father Russell Scepaniak officiating. Casket bearers will be Paul McCarvel, Dan McCarvel, Ryan Hanson, Troy Thompson, Galen Gunther and Tom Martinson. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Brewster.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2012, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster.
