Obituary: Louise Tofteland

We invite friends and relatives of Louise Tofteland to join with us for a celebration of her life to be held on Saturday, July 7th at the Worthington Christian Church, 1501 Douglas Avenue N, in Worthington. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 followed by her Memorial Service and lunch.

Louise was born in Granville, ND to William and Elsie (Childs) Handy on June 4, 1914. The family moved to Minnesota where she started school. Louise lived in Worthington for most of her life with brief moves to California, Luverne, Fulda and back to Worthington. She moved to Minnetonka Assisted Living Facility three years ago and two years ago to the Auburn Manor Nursing Home where she passed away on April 1st, just two months short of her 98th birthday. She was preceded in death by her Husband, Mel, her Grandson, Jason, her Parents, her Brother, Don, her Sisters, Ethel and Winnie, two infant siblings, and her Daughter in Law, Liz.

Louise was working for E.O. Olson in Worthington where she built her first home and met her Husband, Mel Tofteland. They were married on July 2, 1941. Together they designed, built and managed their Sunset Motel. Eventually, they sold it and moved to California. On their return to Worthington, she worked for Ben Franklin, Lewis Chiropractic and Harpers Dress Shop. In 1977, they moved to the lake in Fulda and built their home. Later, they returned to Worthington and settled into their home on 9th Street. Upon Mel’s death, she sold their home and took up apartment living.

Louise’s main interest in life was in helping others. She volunteered at the Worthington Hospital Auxiliary doing the Shopping Cart, RSVP, and rocking the babies. She loved to play cards and was a member at the American Legion, Elks Lodge, Eastern Star and Church of Christ.

She is survived by her two children, Donald in Rapid City, SD, Peggy (Roman ) Roos, in Victoria, MN; sister, Dora Biegler of Wirock; grandchildren, Kelli (Paul) Martens, in Maple Grove, Heidi (David) Schultz, in Carver, Jodi (Denny) Leibel, in Rapid City, SD and Josh Tofteland, in Texas; great-grandchildren, Lauren & Lindsey Martens, Taylor, Payton & Lexi Somerville and Zach & Jared Leibel; step great-grandchildren, Maddie & Payton Schultz; and many nieces ,nephews and friends.

Her final resting place will be at the Worthington Garden of Memories Cemetery beside her beloved Husband, Mel.

Memorials directed to Auburn Manor are preferred in lieu of flowers.
