Bernett (Bernie) Nickel, age 85 of Sanborn, MN, entered into eternal peace on July 22, 2012, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, MN.
Bernie was born May 5, 1927, in Germantown Township of Cottonwood County, to Henry and Irene (Stocker) Nickel. He attended rural school in Germantown Township. Bernie married Marjorie Hubert on August 15, 1948, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Lamberton, MN. He and Marjorie worked side by side on the family farm he was born and raised on; they continued to help their two sons after retiring. He was a member of the Red Rock United Methodist Church and the Cottonwood County Beef Producers and also served on several boards. One activity that brought Bernie great joy was his 30- year membership in the Windom Area Chordhustlers. Bernett enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his passion was farming. Bernie often said he never worked a day in his life, because he loved what he did. After retirement, Bernie loved to attend as many activities as possible – especially those of his grandchildren.
Bernett is lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 64 years, Marjorie; daughter Victoria (Steven) Koehn, of Red Wing, MN; two sons, Steven (Mary) Nickel, of Sanborn, MN, and William (Kimberly) Nickel, of Sanborn, MN; eight grandchildren, Candace, Patrick, Adam, Brittni (Brent) Baune, Turner, Cierra, Crystalline and Bobbe.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Irene Smith, daughter, Penny Gray, sister, Helen Radtke, and infant brother, Dennis.
The funeral service for Bernett will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at the Red Rock United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Laechel officiating. Burial will be in Red Rock United Methodist Cemetery, immediately following the service. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at the Red Rock United Methodist Church. An additional visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Online condolences may be left at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
