Obituary: Lorence Voehl

Lorence Maynard Voehl, 83, was born on November 4, 1928, in Rost Township, Jackson County, MN, the son of Albert and Lydia (Malchow) Voehl.

Lorence Maynard Voehl, 83, was born on November 4, 1928, in Rost Township, Jackson County, MN, the son of Albert and Lydia (Malchow) Voehl. He was a 1946 graduate of Lakefield High School; 1950 graduate of St. Olaf College, and 1952 graduate of the University of Cincinnati. Lorence married Mary Jane Vis on January 22, 1956, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington. He farmed with his dad and taught Physics and Engineering at Sioux Valley Schools from 1957 to 1961. Lorence then taught at Worthington Community College from 1961 until his retirement. He also managed the family farms. Lorence was very musical and involved with St. Matthew Lutheran Church; he directed the choir, played the trombone and also served on many committees. He loved spending time with his grandkids and gardening. Lorence enjoyed playing ping pong with his family into his 80’s. Lorence recently struggled with leukemia and died on Saturday, August 4, 2012, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD.

Lorence is survived by his wife, Mary Jane of Worthington, MN; three children, Courtney Voehl of Fort Pierce, FL, Kristen (Thomas) Johnson of Woodbury, MN, and Randall (Linda) Voehl of Windom, MN; nine grandchildren, Amanda, Connor, Guy, Rosanna, Isabel, Casey, Rachel, Mason, and Haley; one great grandson, Liam, and one sister, Stella Altnow. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Harry; sister, Gladys, and daughter-in-law, Linett Voehl.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Tom Braun officiating. A private burial will be held prior to the service at 9:00 a.m. in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
