Obituary: Gertrude Sands
Gertrude “Gertie” Sands, age 92, died January 11, 2013 at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda, MN.
Gertrude “Gertie” Sands, age 92, was born on April 4, 1920 in Fairview, SD, the daughter of Fred and Fannie (Wiarda) Van Ness. She attended school and church in the Fairview and Canton area. In her youth, she spent some time in California.
Gertie married Vern Hendrix on December 24, 1940. They lived in Colorado until moving to a farm in South Dakota. Vern passed away in 1962. In 1963, she married Mearl Sands and spent 5 years living in Missouri and the remainder of her life in Worthington, MN.
Gertie enjoyed gardening, volunteering at Pioneer Village and The Senior Center, watching ice skating on television and having coffee with her many friends. She attended Grace Community Church until her death on Friday, January 11, 2013 at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda, MN.
Gertie is survived by three sons and one daughter, Randy Sands of Worthington, MN, Richard (Lorie) Hendrix of Las Vegas, NV, Kenneth (Jackie) Hendrix of Sioux Falls, SD, and Janet Hendrix of Worthington, MN; ten grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings, and two spouses.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., at Grace Community Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Scott Barber officiating. Casket bearers will be Randy Sands, Brett Yackley, Kenneth Hendrix, Richard Hendrix, Steve Iseminger, and Joe Dragich. Burial will be in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-7 pm on Tuesday, January 15. 2013 at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
