WORTHINGTON — Silverberg’s was selling Minnesota Twins’ youth jackets for $3.99 (sizes 3 to 6x) and sizes 8-16 were priced at $4.99, Schafer’s Grocery was selling three pounds of hamburger for $1.00, a two-pound can of Butternut coffee for $1.15 and nine cans of Campbell’s Tomato Soup for 99 cents, a single issue of the afternoon edition of the Daily Globe was 10 cents and “West Side Story” was showing at the State Theatre in Worthington.

BLAST: Edgerton wins District 8 in 1963
EDGERTON – A week ago, Southwest Minnesota Christian High School, based in Edgerton, won its fifth Class A boys’ basketball state championship. After a runner-up finish in 2012, the Eagles – who won four straight titles from 1999-2002 – capped a remarkable 30-1 season with a well-played 81-73 victory over Maranatha Christian Academy of Brooklyn Park in the first of four championship games at Target Center.

Twyla Ruth Hungerford
Twyla Hungerford was born on July 13, 1941 in Slayton, Minnesota to Richard and Ruth Johnson Rongstad. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Dovray, MN. Twyla attended Westbrook High School graduating in 1959. Following graduation she attended Minnesota School of Lab and X Ray Technician. Following graduation she worked at the Slayton Clinic for doctor’s Pierson, Nywall and Bader. On February 22, 1963 she and Darrell Hungerford were married at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Following their marriage they made their home in Slayton and raised their two sons. In 1983 they purchased their own hardware business and also started Slayton Plumbing and Heating, which they owned and operated together until 1991 when they sold the business. They remained with Slayton Plumbing and Heating until 2006 when they retired. Twyla was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton where she served as church organist for over 45 years. Twyla also taught Sunday school, release time and summer bible school and was active in the W.E.L.C.A. Twyla passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at her home in Slayton at the age of 71 after a courageous six-year battle with cancer. She and Darrell enjoyed many trips to places like Norway, Germany, Alaska and Florida. Twyla enjoyed music, watching the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings, coffee with friends, feeding and watching the birds and squirrels, and her two golden retrievers. Twyla will be remembered for her giving heart and loyalty to family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Darrell Hungerford of Slayton, MN two sons, Dr. Todd Hungerford of Chicago, IL and Dr. Chad Hungerford and Rebecca Junck of Brookings, SD, four sisters and their spouses, Marilyn and David Erickson of Hayfield, MN, Maydelle and Gene Kronback of Westbrook, MN, Clarice and Tom Kappes of Slayton, MN, Kristin and John Hansen of Currie, MN, family friend, Jim Nawrocki of Chicago, IL and several nieces, nephews, and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, and nephew, Kyle Erickson.
