Tough cookie: Ashley Hoefker is 'elite' seller in annual Girl Scout drive
WORTHINGTON — Like any good saleswoman, Ashley Hoefker is well-versed in her product line. She can rattle off all the varieties of Girl Scout cookies and give a succinct description of each one. “When you’re younger, you have the cuteness factor going for you,” said Ashley, the daughter of Kenneth and Ellen Hoefker of Worthington, explaining that as she got older it was more important to be knowledgeable of her product and incorporate other sales tactics.

Baking & Banter
Four giggling schoolgirls gathered in a Windom kitchen on an unseasonably warm November day. Their mission? To bake enough cookies and other treats to satisfy their family and friends throughout the upcoming holiday season. Those “giggling schoolgirls,” however, are now all approaching 50, and I am one of them.

Arline Harberts
The funeral for Arline Dorothea (Ludtke) Harberts will be held 10:30am Wednesday, June 5, 2013, in the chapel at Samaritan Bethany, 24 8th St. NW, Rochester, MN with Pastor Jean Boese officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00am until time of the service. Burial will be at Oakwood East Cemetery, Rochester. Mrs. Harberts, 96, a resident of Samaritan Bethany, died Saturday, June 1, 2013.
She was born October 3, 1916, in Brewster, MN, to Emil and Laura Ludtke. After being advanced two grades, Arline graduated from High School, as valedictorian, at age 15. After graduation, she worked as Post Master in Brewster and then as a bookkeeper for a county oil company in Worthington, MN. She married FJ (Bud) Harberts, in 1943. She then worked as secretary/treasurer/bookkeeper of the family business for over 30 years. Arline will be remembered for her chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls and crazy cake. Her home was always filled with food, family, friends and fun. She was an avid reader, loved to travel, fish and move; having designed plans for 5 of the 22 homes she lived in throughout her lifetime. In her later years, she became a master jigsaw puzzler, having completed hundreds of puzzles, many numerous times. Between work and raising 5 children, she also found time to pursue her passion of gardening; canning and freezing the results, tending to her many flowers and doing floral arrangements. She was a lifetime member of the American Lutheran Church, a member of the Legion and Hospital Auxiliaries and a Red Cross volunteer. Arline will be remembered most for her strong family values, unconditional love, her kind and gentle heart and her always present smile.

It must be puppy love: Rushmore girl raises money for humane society
RUSHMORE — Every time Layne Kuhl visits the Sioux Falls, S.D., Area Humane Society, she wants to take a dog — or two or three or four, and perhaps a kitten or two, too — home with her. But with two dogs already inhabiting their Rushmore home, mom and dad Melanie and Kris Kuhl have firmly said no. They just don’t have the room, time and resources to provide for another pet.

Column: Take a tour of an old-time Candy Trail
WORTHINGTON — My, what a year was 1912. It keeps cropping up. It was April 1912 that the Titanic sank. It was 1912 when Worthington’s Hotel Thompson was opened. It was 1912 when F. Scott Fitzgerald was born at St. Paul. And, if you haven’t had a Nut Goodie lately, take a look the next time you buy groceries. Nut Goodies, in their red and green wrappers, were first put on the market in 1912. A lot of centennials.
