John I. Nickelson
Age 87, formerly of Worthington. Passed away April 16, 2013 at Mt. Olivet Careview Home in Minneapolis, MN. John was born in Pocahontas County, Iowa, in 1925 to Elim and Nellie Nickelson. He grew up on the family farm and attended high school in Havelock before moving to Storm Lake, where he met his future wife and graduated from Buena Vista College. He moved to Worthington with his bride, Norma, in 1951 to play baseball with the city team and to work with Greeley Gas Company, from which he retired in 1987. Over the course of his life, he devoted his time to family, sports, and volunteerism. He was an enthusiastic baseball, softball, football, basketball, tennis and golf player, and he brought that same enthusiasm to such volunteer activities as delivering meals-on-wheels, preparing taxes, and greeting high school students. He was also active in his church, Masons, and Eastern Star. John was preceded in death by his wife, Norma; parents, Elim and Nellie; brothers, Elim and Robert; and infant sister, Elizabeth. He is survived by daughters, Dawn, Laura (Bob), Hollis (Martin); son, John (Laura); grandchildren, T.R., Warren, Patrick, Nathan, Ryan, Hannah and Erika; great-grandchildren, Carter, Mason, Karla, Brynn, Esther, Rebekah; sister, Myrtle; brother, James; and other loving relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 408 11th St., Worthington, MN, Pastor Gordon J. Orde officiating. Visitation 1 hour prior.
