Gene H. Fury, age 83 of Excelsior, passed into the loving arms of his Lord Jesus and Savior on May 22, 2013 surrounded by his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be missed by his family and friends. He was kind, compassionate, warm, loving, and had a keen sense of humor. His spirit resides in the hearts of those who loved him. Gene grew up farming in Dundee, Minnesota and had various occupations including: bus driver for the Twin Cities MTC, welder, manager of Excelsior Park Car Wash, and then joined his wife Ann in the antique business. He was an active member of the AA fellowship for the past 40 years. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ann M Fury (Schwab), daughters, Celeste Pike, Patricia (Don) Kaiser, Carol (Jerry) Fistman, Katherine (Gib) Syverson, Julie (Clay) Rice; sons Dan (Mia) Fury, Tim (Tia) Fury. Grandchildren, Jackie Pike, Jessica Swartout, Heidi Kaiser, Heather Kaiser, Karl Syverson, Bryony Johnson, Sumia Fury, Liam Fury, McKenna Fury, Emma Fury; five great grand children, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Eva Fury, Brother James Fury, nephew Tom Fury. JOHN RAYMOND MULLER, age 85, of Fulda, died Friday, May 17, 2013, at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda. He was born December 11, 1927, in rural Adrian, to Adolf and Grace (Van Dyke) Muller. He attended country school at Nobles County Dist. #14; and graduated from Little Rock High School in Little Rock, IA. After graduation, John worked in Minneapolis before being drafted in the United States Army. He served his country in the Korean Conflict from 1946 to 1947 attaining the rank of Platoon Sargent. After his discharge, he returned to Minnesota to farm with his father & brother.
John married Mollyann Zanter on October 7, 1950, at the Avoca Lutheran Church. The couple farmed by Slayton and south of Fulda for over thirty years. In 1973, John was appointed District Sales Manager for JC Robinson Golden Harvest Seed Co. A position he held for twenty years, receiving many sales awards. John & Mollyann sold their farm and moved to Fulda in 1991. They spent their retirement years wintering in Texas & Arizona.

Marie Alene Starkenburg, age 94, was born on July 16, 1918, in George, IA, the daughter of Klaus and Amelia (Van Hauen) Klaassen. Marie married John E. Starkenburg on January 18, 1938, in Sibley, IA. She worked as a sales clerk in several downtown stores. After retiring, her hobbies included cooking and she was noted for her Christmas cookie trays. Marie enjoyed many crafts, especially dressing teddy bears. She loved flowers and grew many in her backyard. Marie died on Sunday, May 12, 2013, at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda, MN.
Marie is survived by one daughter, Lillian (Gil) Johnsson; one brother, Vernon Klaassen, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and a sister and brother.

Catherine Louise Scurr
Catherine Louise Scurr was born October 30, 1915 in Burlington, Iowa. Her parents were Robert Boniface Sutter and Henrietta Adams. She grew up in various railroad communities across Illinois and Iowa. She graduated from Galesburg HS, at the age of 16, in 1932, in Galesburg, Illinois. Catherine attended one year of college in Galesburg before moving to Creston, Iowa, where she worked at various positions at Spurgeon’s Department store for the next few years. She married Howard T. Scurr, Jr. on February 26, 1940, in Ottumwa, Iowa. Catherine had a passion for helping people and chose nursing as her profession. She attended nursing school at Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville, Illinois, while her husband served as a medical officer (dentist) in the European Theater of WW II. Soon after the end of the war, they began their family and raised four children, Robert, David, Le and Bonnie in Oskaloosa, Iowa, until 1964, when they moved back to Burlington, Iowa, where Howard continued practicing dentistry. In Burlington, Catherine began her nursing career in earnest, where she cared for newborn babies in the nursery on the OB/GYN floor at Mercy Hospital.
Catherine loved cooking for family, crocheting and knitting family gifts and socializing with friends and family. Catherine and Howard loved to travel (especially by train) and spent several vacations in Florida, Texas, and California. In 1997, she and Howard moved to The Meadows (a retirement community) in Worthington, MN. They enjoyed going out for meals with family and friends, spending time at the cabin with daughter, Le, and family and continued to travel to the Black Hills, Seattle and throughout Minnesota. A year after Howard’s death in 2004, Catherine moved to Lakeview Assisted Living in Heron Lake, MN. She loved the staff and residents of Lakeview and always told people, “I have so many good friends surrounding me.”

Donald Matthew Fest was born at home on the farm in LaCrosse Township, Jackson County, Minnesota, the son of Arthur and Theresa (Disteldorf) Fest. Don was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake. He attended Heron Lake Schools graduating in 1949. Don married his high school sweetheart, Rita Bickner, on August 28, 1951 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Don and Rita moved to the farm he was born on shortly after their wedding and have lived there since. Don officially retired from farming but still helped his son, Mike farm. Don passed away on Friday, May 3, 2013 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 82 years, three months, and twenty-nine days.
Donald was a life-long member at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. Don and Rita enjoyed camping and traveling to see relatives. Don spent a lot of time at the hunting shack with his buddies, hunting deer and duck. He also enjoyed morning coffee at P.J’s Mini-Mart with his friends. One of Don’s favorite things was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who fondly called him Grandpa Duck.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Friday, May 10 at Risen Savior Catholic Church, Brandon, with burial at St. Michael Cemetery, Sioux Falls. Visitation begins at 5:00 PM Thursday, May 9 at George Boom Funeral Chapel, Brandon, where the family will greet friends from 5:00 Pm to 7:00 PM, followed by a Liturgical Wake Service and Rosary at 7:00 PM.
Patricia Ann Burns, daughter of Tom and Gertrude (Swanson) Burns, was born February 13, 1933 in Worthington, MN. She graduated from Worthington High School in 1951 and earned a degree in home economics from Saint Catherine's College, St. Paul, MN in 1955. Pat worked for Northern States Power in St. Paul for several years before moving to Sioux Falls, SD.

Sun Lakes, AZ- Patricia Ann Kleinvachter, beloved wife, mother, and sister, passed away on April 29, 2013 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Lois Ann (Gustafson) Swanson died February 8th at the age of 88 in Shakopee, MN. She was born in Minneapolis, MN, January 5, 1925 to parents Arthur and Ann Gustafson.
When Lois was young, the family moved to Worthington and that is where she grew up. Lois was active in choir and youth mission groups at Westminster Presbyterian Church. She attended Worthington High School where she lettered in band, and was a member of the “Quill & Scroll” society.
