Labor of love: Rice dish worth the extra effort
In the process of putting together this risotto one evening for supper, I found out quite quickly that it required two things from the cook — brute strength and patience — both attributes for which I am not known. The brute strength part came in cutting up the squash. Hubby Bryan brought home quite a large butternut squash, and it took a bit of wrangling to turn it into small cubes.

Getting sauced: Simple sauce preserves flavors of late summer
My Italian grandmother would be proud of me. Well, I imagine she would be proud of me if I had an Italian grandmother. Since my heritage is mostly German with a bit of British Isles thrown in, tomato sauce does not run through my veins. When I set out to make Italian-style tomato sauce from scratch, I had to start with the basics.

This dish really stacks up
For Midwesterners who love to eat food fresh from the garden, this is the best time of year. Local gardens are teaming with bright heavy tomatoes, slender green beans, colossal cabbages, a variety of peppers, zucchini almost as long as my arms – all kinds of vegetables – fresh and full of flavor.
