WASHINGTON — On Wednesday night, senators took a break from the hard work of rescuing the nation’s finances. They summoned Daniel Day-Lewis and Steven Spielberg, ordered in popcorn, and watched the movie “Lincoln.” After Thursday night’s debacle in the House — in which Speaker John Boehner had to pull his own tax bill from the floor for lack of votes — Republicans in that chamber may wish to schedule a movie night of their own.

O Christmas Tree: Deck the halls with boughs of metal
Judy and Jon Benson’s Christmas tree doesn’t have any tinsel. The light that illuminates it comes from below, not from individual lights on its branches. But it’s still got plenty of sparkle. The Worthington couple is enjoying their first year of having an unconventional Christmas tree.

O Christmas Tree: Angels from the realms of family
CURRIE — Louise Gervais doesn’t expect that she’ll get together with all the members of her large family this Christmas season. But they’ll still be with her nonetheless. SCOTT RALL COLUMN: Where have all the roosters gone?
WORTHINGTON — I was hoping to make it ’til the New Year without any snow. No snow at all would have been better. A few inches of rain in March needs no shoveling. But the snow is here and that is to be expected. And with the snow comes the winding down of the season’s hunting opportunities, with the pheasant hunting season closing Jan. 1.
