Stage hand: Janssen one of original Lake Okabena windsurfers
WORTHINGTON — Among the ranks of the many volunteers who help each year with the Windsurfing Regatta and Unvarnished Music Festival, there are a few windsurfers — not a lot — but a few who occasionally test the wind and waters of Lake Okabena. One such is Marc Janssen, although his volunteer effort has little to do with the windsurfing.

Marvin Raymond Winkel
Marvin Raymond Winkel was born October 15, 1927 in Jackson County, Minnesota to Henry and Louise Winkel. He grew up on the farm and attended Wilder school. Marvin enlisted in the army in February of 1954. He was stationed in Germany and served as a guided missile crewman until his discharge in January of 1956. After serving his country, Marvin returned to Minnesota and proceeded to work on the family farm. During this time he was united in marriage to Margaretha, and had three daughters to this union. The marriage was later dissolved. Marvin continued his love of farming up until his retirement in 1989. Shortly after his retirement he married Joan, on February 24, 1990. The two shared a strong love for nature, so much so that they decided to live on Lake Miltona. Marvin and Joan resided there for the rest of their years together.
Throughout the years, Marvin and Joan spent their free time camping, fishing, hunting, and gardening. They took many fishing trips to Chamberlain, South Dakota along the Missouri River. In 1999, they had the trip of a lifetime driving all the way to Alaska. They spent many hours enjoying the view of the lake and the wildlife that came to their yard. Marvin taught his children the value of a good work ethic and spoke up for what he believed in. He never missed a day when he could go shake dice for coffee in Miltona, and happy hour at Leaf Valley Merchantile.

Worthington church marks a century of faith
WORTHINGTON — Dave Vander Kooi may have been a bit reluctant to spearhead the 100th anniversary committee at the Worthington Christian Reformed Church — it involved 14 months of planning to get to this weekend’s celebration — but he really was the perfect guy for the job. After all, the congregation was founded around his grandparents’ kitchen table.
