WORTHINGTON — With Christmas over and the New Year’s celebration complete, people might be looking out their window in anxious anticipation of the first signs of spring. But, it’s Minnesota, and we all know those signs won’t be showing up anytime soon.

SCOTT RALL COLUMN: Set goals that are attainable
WORTHINGTON — When I listen to nation-wide radio or watch national news, it makes me feel pretty good to live in the midwest. We don’t have super storms like Sandy to deal with and there are no earthquakes or giant mud slides that threaten our existence. We have an occasional tornado and they can be very destructive, but it’s not like they happen every week.

SCOTT RALL COLUMN: Where have all the roosters gone?
WORTHINGTON — I was hoping to make it ’til the New Year without any snow. No snow at all would have been better. A few inches of rain in March needs no shoveling. But the snow is here and that is to be expected. And with the snow comes the winding down of the season’s hunting opportunities, with the pheasant hunting season closing Jan. 1.

RALL: Less is more on outdoor Christmas list
In the land of pheasant hunting, I usually ask all of the people I hunt with this question: Is it better to shoot and miss or to have not shot the gun at all?

SCOTT RALL COLUMN: I thought you were never coming home
WORTHINGTON — There isn’t a dog owner on Earth who hasn’t bragged about the performance of his or her hunting dog at one time or another. Hunting dogs can do some amazing things. Some dog owners can’t stop talking about it.

SCOTT RALL COLUMN: Trapping and the connection it gives
WORTHINGTON — What or who is a trapper? What a rare and endangered breed they are. Fifty years ago, trapping was like hunting. If you lived in the country, almost every kid trapped and hunted. I can remember, as a kid, trapping gophers on my grandpa’s farm near the tiny town of Wetonka in north central South Dakota.

Dogs: It’s easier to wind them in than wind them up
WORTHINGTON — It can only happen once for the dog and happens very seldom for most dog owners. For Tracer, it happened a few weeks back. The last time it happened to me was two years ago with a black lab named Axle.

SCOTT RALL COLUMN: Beauty is in the eye of the deer holder
WORTHINGTON — So what does the most beautiful woman in the world look like? I certainly can’t tell you. The definition of most beautiful is different depending on which guy you ask. Some guys love blondes and some love brunettes. Others yet think redheads are the most beautiful. So in the end, who is right? They are all right from their own perspective.

Column: Defeat of the 1 percent
BOSTON — It was a victory party fit for the 1 percent. Over in Chicago, the Obama campaign had invited 10,000 to fill the floor of the McCormick Place convention center. But here in Boston, Mitt Romney favored a more genteel soiree for an exclusive crowd.

Out of tragedy and struggles, Sudanese woman earns right to vote
WORTHINGTON — When Abang Agwa received her visa to come to the United States, she was grateful to leave the terror-filled Sudan behind. She had great dreams of living in a country built on freedoms that would cloak her in a feeling of safety.

RALL: Shooters need to behave or get out
WORTHINGTON — It makes me wonder just who thinks up some of the laws regarding wildlife that make it on the books. I try very hard to stay on top of regulatory developments in the land of game, fish and wildlife. I am on an email list that gets me a few news releases every week regarding happenings on a state level and at the Department of Natural Resources.
