SCOTT RALL COLUMN: Start at amateur and work your way up
I have often referred to my life with my dogs as living in an interdependent relationship. They need me and I need them. They need me for food and shelter and medical care. They also need the human love and affection that all dogs crave and I give tons of that. They need to know where their place in the pack as they are all descendants of wolves. Knowing their place in life gives a dog balance.

SCOTT RALL COLUMN: Tons of company are to be expected for pheasant season
I have waited 364 days for tomorrow. Saturday, October 13 is the Minnesota Pheasant hunting season opener. Last year I wandered along with a group of mostly new hunters at the first ever Governors Pheasant hunt that was held in Montevideo, Minn. This year, the Governors’ hunt will be hosted in Marshall, only 60 miles away. I received another invitation this year, but am going to skip the actual hunting part of the weekend and attend a dedication ceremony for an addition to a local WMA in the Marshall area. This should be pretty cool.

Spectatular beauty within four hours drive of home
WORTHINGTON — Does it take an airplane ride or a really long drive to see something totally spectacular? It really depends on what you think qualifies as totally spectacular. I took a four-hour drive and saw something very spectacular — the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands, located across the Missouri River in South Dakota.

Letter: Plenty of reasons to support new outdoor pool
Swimming and hot summer days go hand in hand. This summer we enjoyed great weather, but finding an outdoor pool large enough for older kids to swim in was a challenge.

SCOTT RALL COLUMN: A legacy for a lifetime
WORTHINGTON — The passage of the Land and Legacy amendment in 2008 raised the sales tax in Minnesota by three-eighths of 1 percent to create dedicated funding for the outdoors. It’s a legacy we should feel good about.

Let's 'pool together' for new outdoor pool
Summer is officially over. With the end of summer comes a feeling of great disappointment; did I get outside often enough to enjoy what summer has to offer before the Minnesota cold sets in?

Zebra mussel discovered in Iowa Great Lakes
Invasive species has potential to cause ecological devastation
SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa — Since this spring, sampling plates have been dangling from the bottom of navigation buoys throughout the Iowa Great Lakes so Department of Natural Resources staff can monitor for the appearance of zebra mussels, an invasive species that has plagued bodies of water not just in Iowa and Minnesota, but throughout at least 29 states across the U.S.

SCOTT RALL COLUMN: Outsmarted by a brain the size of a pea
WORTHINGTON — It was a few years back on one of the coldest days that North Dakota had ever seen since the ice age that I pulled into a gas station in Ellendale, N.D. There was a guy gassing up his truck with Eskimo mittens on and he had on an orange cap so I assumed he was pheasant hunting.

Mammals and bird dogs don’t mix
WORTHINGTON — Two gentlemen (maybe even pheasant hunters after a day in the field) sitting on bar stools, enjoying a cold beer have debated the merits as to whether his Chevy Truck is better or worse than the other man’s Ford at least 100,000 times. At the end of the debate there is still no consensus and if they did it another 100,000 times the result would most likely be the same.
