Letter: Ad listing religious groups contained falsehoods
An advertisement in Thursday’s edition of the Daily Globe names 15 religious groups, singling out the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) as the only one which does not believe that marriage should be between one man and one woman. This is not true.

Hometown guy: Jim Laffrenzen retires after 42 years of working for city
WORTHINGTON — As the newbie on the Worthington Street Department in late 1970, one of Jim Laffrenzen’s first tasks was to walk in front of what was then the city’s sole snowblower, directing its path and that of the drivers who were hauling off the snow. “It was cold, and you had to dodge ice chunks, but it was a job,” he recalled. “Those first seven winters, I probably spent 15 to 18 hours straight every time it snowed out in front of that blower.”

WORTHINGTON — In real life, Erick Baumgart is an officer in the Worthington Police Department, a relative newcomer to the community, having moved here from Winona less than a year ago. Chipotle peppers add spice to classic comfort food
At our house, Hubby Bryan is generally a much earlier riser than I am. In fact, he rarely needs an alarm clock to wake him up, although he sets one every night, just in case. On the rare occasions when that alarm does go off, I can snooze right through it, seldom rousing enough to realize that he has left my side.

Proud to persevere: Bob Rohrer reflects on life affected by childhood polio
WORTHINGTON — As people sometimes do as they approach a milestone birthday, Bob Rohrer recently took some time to reflect on his life. Bob turned 70 on Sept. 13, and what put his lifespan in perspective was a yellowed and tattered newspaper clipping from 60 years prior (above left), when Bob celebrated his 10th birthday in an iron lung at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Steward of safety: Clyde Hoffman retires as state patrol bus inspector
WORTHINGTON — When Clyde Hoffman started his job as a vehicle inspector with the Minnesota State Patrol, carbon paper was a valuable commodity because all the reports had to be submitted in triplicate. “Good carbon paper was like gold,” he recalled with a laugh. “We actually had supplies hidden. Then we sent to self-carbonization — what an upgrade! — and then gradually into computers.”
