SLAYTON —Murray County Central senior Jack Thony enjoyed a Jesse Owens-type of day Thursday, as he earned four gold medals in the Sub-Section 10 (Section 3A, Sub-Region 2) high school track and field meet.
Thony won all three sprints 100-meter dash (10.95), 200 (22.26) and 400 (51.09), while also placing first in the long jump (20 feet, three inches) to complete a perfect day and score 40 points for the Rebels.
A trio of boys were multiple-event champions Thursday at the Section 3A, Sub-Region 1 (Sub-Section 9) high school track and field meet, highlighting a large group of athletes who qualified to compete at the Section 3A meet at Benson May 30.
NEW ULM — Sarah Ebbers pitched seven strong innings, and Paige Kinley went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to help lead the sixth-seeded Worthington Trojans to a 4-2 victory over the third-seeded Jackson County Central Huskies in the first round of the Section 3AA South high school softball tournament Tuesday afternoon.
TRACY — Tianna Top pitched a pair of complete games Tuesday afternoon, helping the fourth-seeded Edgerton/Southwest Christian Flying Dutchmen claim two victories in the Section 3A South high school softball tournament.
WORTHINGTON — It was a longshot, but it may have been the Eagles’ only option if an upset were to happen Monday in their Section 3A boys tennis showdown against Worthington.
Lac qui Parle Valley adjusted its lineup to strengthen its doubles entries, hoping a victory at No. 1 singles would mesh with a sweep of the doubles events to give the underdogs an unexpected pass into the tournament’s second round.
REDWOOD FALLS — Sometimes, in baseball, the breaks fall your way. And sometimes they don’t.
Monday was one of those latter days for the Worthington Trojans, who lost a doubleheader to Southwest Conference foe Redwood Valley on scores of 9-3 and 4-2.
LUVERNE — Never dropping more than two games in any set, the Luverne Cardinals boys tennis team solidified its No. 1 ranking in the Section 3A tournament Monday by disposing of Yellow Medicine East, 7-0.
