Looking Back - 2000: Closure of Worthington's KMart is announced

One year ago Sarah Jacobs received the Worthington FFA chapter’s Star in Ag Entrepreneurship at the chapter’s annual banquet. Nicole Burkard received the Star in Ag Placement. Paul Rogers and Jim Kolander were the new inductees of the Honorary Chapter FFA degree. Stephanie Behrens was named the Star Chapter Greenhand.

Wolff’s Department Store, a major downtown Worthington retail store since 1920, announced its closing. Members of the family, Payson Wolff and Rhoda Wolff Mains, officially announced the store would be closing soon. Since the death of Florence Wolff, widow of store founder Robert Wolff, no other Wolff family members resided in Worthington.

Firemen from Slayton and Fulda worked throughout Saturday night and into Sunday morning fighting a blaze that destroyed the Mansch Brothers Furniture Store at Slayton and an apartment above the store. Loss was estimated at $150,000.
