Column: Luverne woman recalls life as a shepherd

WORTHINGTON — I was writing about being with President Harry Truman at the Manitou Hotel at Luverne. Mr. Truman climbed three flights of stairs to shake hands with Jake Ohlsen, a longtime Rock County Democratic chairman who was partially paralyzed by a stroke. That was 1956. I believe I did not get back to the Manitou until 1984.

Column: Media violence and its negative effects

Column: Media violence and its negative effects Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, an internationally known scholar, author, soldier and speaker, is one of the world’s leading experts in violence and human aggression. District 518 staff members along with other members of the community had the opportunity to hear him speak.

Column: The snag that isn't

WASHINGTON — There are any number of good reasons for House Democrats to vote against health-care reform. Abortion isn’t one of them.

By Ruth Marcus , March 20, 2010

Column: A system out of control

SAN DIEGO — In California, the criminal justice system’s method of dealing with sexual predators who harm or even kill children is — to borrow a phrase — stuck on stupid.

By Ruben Navarrette , March 19, 2010

Column: Israel's new enemy - America?

WASHINGTON — Despite Vice President Joe Biden’s recent pledge of unswerving fidelity to Israel during his recent visit there, the rhetoric and pressure directed by the Obama administration against the only fully functioning democracy in the Middle East more accurately resembles the behavior of an enemy.

Column: Hard to speak the truth

MIAMI — Three little words. That’s what keeps bringing us back to this intersection of low comedy and pathos. Three words, none longer than three letters — and yet, some of us still find them nearly impossible to say. Three words: I am gay.

By Leonard Pitts , March 18, 2010

Column: Sneak and sprint

WASHINGTON — As Democrats consider shoving health care reform through the House with a process known as “deem and pass,” it is helpful to return to square one and ask: What, again, is the rush?

Column: Help curb Sallie Mae's sugar addiction

AUSTIN, Texas — Sallie Mae isn’t one of those girls who’re made of “sugar and spice and everything nice.” Well, she is filled with sugar, but it comes from you and me, thanks to a longtime sweetheart deal she has from the federal government.

By Jim Hightower, Minuteman Media , March 18, 2010

Column: Are you ready for a tax increase?

ST. PAUL — Just one month after the start of the 2010 legislative session, Sen. Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook, chair of the Senate Tax Committee, proposed a whopping new tax increase — a sales tax on all clothing.

By Phil Krinkie, Taxpayers League of Minnesota , March 17, 2010

Column: Private in New Jersey

WASHINGTON — New Jersey’s new Republican governor, Chris Christie, is creating a commission that will recommend what state government functions could be done better — and cheaper — by the private sector.

Column: The next, best reason for sex offender house

FARGO, N.D. — The notice from Fargo Police seemed straightforward enough: James William Thompson Jr., a high-risk sex offender, was moving from one Fargo address to another.

By Matthew Von Pinnon, The Forum , March 17, 2010

Column: 'Jihad Jane' shatters terror stereotype

MIAMI — It has no particular religion nor creed, nor style of dress, nor gender nor geographic home. Evil is an equal opportunity employer.

By Leonard Pitts , March 16, 2010

Column: The big Down Under is small back home

SYDNEY, Australia — Tell me if you’ve heard this one. A blonde swimsuit model gets involved with a sports superstar.

By Mitch Albom , March 16, 2010

Column: Saving the world, one woman at a time

WASHINGTON — If your impression of an Afghan woman is of a shapeless, frightened form engulfed in yards of heat-trapping fabric, you haven’t met Shafiqa Quraishi.
