The Luverne Cardinals baseball team participated in the Class AA Minnesota State High School Baseball Tournament last Thursday and Friday against St. Cloud Cathedral, Hermantown and Delano in St. Cloud.
ST. PAUL — Getting 22 points from sprinter Jack Thony, 12 from state shot put champion Tanner Nepp and six more from hurdler Tyler Scotting, the Murray County Central Rebels tied Perham (40 points each) for second place in the final boys’ standings of the Class A state track and field meet Saturday at Klas Field on the campus of Hamline University.
For the third year in a row, Worthington senior Kate Lesnar is spending most of her free time at the local golf courses in preparation for the Girls’ Class AA State Tournament.
And she couldn’t be more excited for another chance to prove herself against the best the state of Minnesota has to offer.
MARSHALL — Thanks to another sparkling pitching performance by senior righthander Collin Lovell, along with a timely base hit from senior second baseman Andy Pfeffer — followed by the game’s lone error on the sharply-stroked single — the Windom Eagles earned state tournament advancement in high school baseball for the first time in 26 years, claiming a 1-0 victory over Springfield Thursday in the Section 3A championship game at Legion Field.
WINDOM — As the ball rolled toward him, time seemed to slow down for Luverne’s Reed Skattum.
All he could think about was scooping up the grounder and stepping on first base to record the final out of Section 3AA Baseball Championship game and securing a spot in the Class AA Baseball State Tournament for the Cardinals.
WORTHINGTON — Jared Keaveny, who for the past seven years has headed the program at Campbell-Tintah Public Schools in Campbell, Minn., has been hired to be the new varsity boys basketball coach at Worthington High School.
ST. PETER — Worthington’s Will Dudley finished second in the boys’ pole vault after clearing a height of 13 feet, 11 inches to secure a trip to state during the Section 2AA track meet Wednesday at Gustavus Adolphus College.
MARSHALL — The Murray County Central Rebels boy golfers didn’t win the Section 3A championship by a few strokes Wednesday. They won it by a lot.
MCC turned in a score of 331 at the Marshall meet, 38 strokes better than runnerup Springfield’s 369.
MARSHALL — Tianna Top recorded a complete game shutout to lead the Edgerton/Southwest Christian Flying Dutchmen to a 6-0 win over the Wabasso Rabbits Tuesday to advance to the Section 3A softball championship game.
