MARSHALL — On a windy day when balls were flying in all directions, it all came down to a single stroke.
In the end, it was the Windom Eagles who managed to keep their composure to card a winning score of 319 — edging Springfield/Comfrey and Westbrook-Walnut Grove (320 each) by a stroke Friday at the Section 3A golf meet at the Marshall Country Club to secure a state tournament berth.
MARSHALL — At the turn, the Red Rock Central Falcons were in the lead over Lakeview and Minneota, and with nine holes to play, it was any team’s tournament.
“We had the lead at the turn and thought we had a good chance to in it,” RRC head coach Steve Wegman said. “But the lowest scores from Lakeview and Minneota were too much to overcome.”
WORTHINGTON — For seven holes, Windom’s Hunter Johnson was cruising through Monday’s Sub-Section 3A golf tournament at Worthington Country Club.
However, even with a double bogey and a bogey on Nos. 8 and 9, respectively, Johnson finished with a 73 to lead Windom to a team score of 316 to advance to the Section 3A tournament.
WORTHINGTON — One round wasn’t enough to decide a winner for the girls’ Red Rock Conference medalist.
Red Rock Central senior Sarah DeCock and Southwest Christian eight-grader Emaleigh Vreeman needed two holes to determine the top spot.
DeCock came out on top as the RRC girls shot a 409 to claim the conference title.
On the boys’ side, Westbrook-Walnut Grove carded a 343 to claim the victory.
BLUE EARTH — Jackson County Central finally met its match Monday, as the host Blue Earth Buccaneers knocked off the Huskies’ boys and girls golf teams in a non-conference duel at the Estherville Golf Club.
PIPESTONE — Despite chilly temperatures and a stiff breeze, the Pipestone Area Arrows won both the boys and girls golf competitions against the visiting Worthington teams Monday afternoon at the Pipestone Country Club.
WORTHINGTON — The Marshall Tigers carded some fine scores despite the cold wind Monday afternoon, beating the Worthington Trojans in both the boys’ and girls’ competition.
The Marshall boys totaled 162 on the day, while the Trojan boys scored 207. The Marshall girls carded a team score of 194, beating the Trojan girls’ total of 219.
