Round Lake, Brewster move forward after residents vote for school consolidation
ROUND LAKE — Superintendent Cornelius “Corny” Smit described Thursday the next steps for the Round Lake-Brewster school districts as “behind the scenes” and “informal” after residents of Round Lake and Brewster voted overwhelmingly earlier this week for consolidation.
More than 400 years spent in the halls of Worthington District 518 schools. That’s what the combined experience adds up to for the staff members who are calling it quits at the end of this school year. The school district has a large number retiring this year, due to an early retirement incentive. Here’s a short overview of what they have contributed to local education and a few highlights of their careers.
School board approves contract starting in fall WORTHINGTON —After much discussion among the board members at Tuesday’s board meeting, the District 518 School Board voted unanimously to accept Bud’s Bus Service as the transportation company, beginning in the fall.
WORTHINGTON — As they near the end of the first three years of the Flexible Learning Year (FLY) program, 22 area school districts have submitted an application to participate in the program for another three years.
School board also hears special education details WORTHINGTON — Fourteen longtime District 518 instructors will take advantage of the retirement incentive the school board approved last month, it was announced at Tuesday night’s routine monthly board meeting.
School district takes initial steps to close high school ROUND LAKE — After years of declining enrollment and subsequent financial difficulties, the Round Lake-Brewster School District has begun the consolidation process and is in the preliminary planning stages of closing the Round Lake high school and establishing secondary tuition agreements with neighboring school districts.
All of the recent local discussion about whether to include the seat of appointed school board member John Meyers in a special Western Iowa Tech Community College election next month got us thinking about a subject we have discussed in this space before.
