Invasive species has potential to cause ecological devastation
SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa — Since this spring, sampling plates have been dangling from the bottom of navigation buoys throughout the Iowa Great Lakes so Department of Natural Resources staff can monitor for the appearance of zebra mussels, an invasive species that has plagued bodies of water not just in Iowa and Minnesota, but throughout at least 29 states across the U.S.

SIBLEY, Iowa — Robert Dean Graves, 74, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, was pronounced dead at the Osceola Community Hospital Wednesday morning following a one-vehicle accident, according to information released by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa — A Spirit Lake woman accused of taking money from a non-profit group was sentenced to more than a year in federal prison after pleading guilty to one count of filing a false 2004 federal tax return.
Margaret Ruth Waltz, 46, of Spirit Lake, was executive director of BASS, the Before and After School Services program that provided care to children enrolled in Head Start, Department of Education at-risk programs and early childhood special education programs. BASS received funds from the Iowa Department of Human Services, private grants and fees charged to parents who participated in the program.
