Getting only three runners on base during the entire seven innings Friday morning, the Section 3A champion Windom Eagles were eliminated from the 2013 Class A state high school baseball tournament without scoring a run in two games.
Given a second chance in the bottom of the first inning Thursday afternoon, St. Agnes’ center fielder Jake Gutzmann reached base and later scored the game’s only run as the defending Class A state champion Aggies advanced to today’s semifinals with a 1-0 victory over Section 3A champion Windom at the Mini Met.
ST. PAUL — Getting 22 points from sprinter Jack Thony, 12 from state shot put champion Tanner Nepp and six more from hurdler Tyler Scotting, the Murray County Central Rebels tied Perham (40 points each) for second place in the final boys’ standings of the Class A state track and field meet Saturday at Klas Field on the campus of Hamline University.
MARSHALL — Thanks to another sparkling pitching performance by senior righthander Collin Lovell, along with a timely base hit from senior second baseman Andy Pfeffer — followed by the game’s lone error on the sharply-stroked single — the Windom Eagles earned state tournament advancement in high school baseball for the first time in 26 years, claiming a 1-0 victory over Springfield Thursday in the Section 3A championship game at Legion Field.
ST. PAUL — Both the Hills-Beaver Creek and Luverne boys’ 4x100-meter relay teams are highly seeded for today’s running preliminaries as the 2013 Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) track and field meet opens at Klas Field on the campus of Hamline University in St. Paul.
Zach Dingmann took control of the Windom Pirates on the pitcher’s rubber while Colin Sandbulte and Glen Kruger led the way the bats, and the Adrian A’s came away with a 6-1 victory in amateur baseball Wednesday night.
WINDOM — Windom may be in the middle of road construction, but it isn’t letting that put a damper on the Riverfest activities. In fact, the road work inspired this year’s Riverfest theme: “Under Construction.”
The Luverne Cardinals used a two-out, two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to upend top-seeded Fairmont 4-3 in the semifinals of the Section 3AA baseball tournament Saturday. And the Windom Eagles made a first-inning run hold up in a tense 1-0 triumph over Lac Qui Parle Valley.
WINDOM — Down by two heading into the third inning, the Edgerton/Southwest Christian Flying Dutchmen scored 10 unanswered runs to cruise to a 10-2 win over the Wabasso Rabbits during a Section 3A baseball tournament game Tuesday.
WINDOM — If you didn’t know any better, you’d probably think Windom Area head baseball coach Brad Schlomann doesn’t know Brandon Thongvivong’s talents as intimately as he should.
In reality, however, nobody knows them better.
