WORTHINGTON — In 1775, the Continental Congress issued a call for fasting and prayer.
President Abraham Lincoln declared a national day of prayer and fasting in 1863 — as the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg raged.
The observance of a National Day of Prayer was signed into law in 1952 by President Harry Truman.
In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed into law the designation of the first Thursday in May as the annual observance for the National Day of Prayer.
