Scammers who convince older Minnesotans to send money to people they think they are helping are targeted by a new bill.

Now is the season when students are preparing for college by filling out applications and taking the required tests. Scam artists are taking advantage of this time by phoning families with bogus sales of college entrance exam study materials.

BEMIDJI - The First National Bank of Bemidji reported that on Tuesday evening, an automated telephone calling system began calling Bemidji phone numbers, primarily with the 333 prefix. The computer voice identified itself generically as the “First National Bank,” reciting the following:
“Your card has been suspended, please call the security department to have your card re-activated.”
