WORTHINGTON — Two words can pretty much sum up the 2009 crop year in southwest Minnesota — weather delays.
By the last week in April, 40 percent of the state’s corn crop had been planted, along with 2 percent of the state’s soybean acres. Then came the rains.
July 1: The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has found the body of Dale Allen Maine, 39, of Lakefield. According to a press release issued Tuesday morning, Maine’s body was found by members of the sheriff’s office at approximately 6:30 p.m. Monday in the 79-acre Belmont Park, approximately 7 miles north of Jackson.
BREWSTER — There were no injuries, no lives lost and no mass explosions, but when a fire broke out at Minnesota Soybean Processors on May 23, more than 20 fire departments from across southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa responded to the scene with manpower, tanker trucks, aerials and turn-out gear.
WORTHINGTON — As the economy teetered back and forth in 2009 and government officials struggled to find ways to save and create new jobs, the recession struck in southwest Minnesota, causing three large employers to lay off large portions of their workforces.
WORTHINGTON — What started out as a rocky year regarding funding ended as a successful year of arrests for the Buffalo Ridge Drug Task Force (BRDTF).
Task Force Commander Troy Appel has not yet released 2009 numbers, but said he is very pleased with the number of drug-related arrests and investigations in the past year.
WORTHINGTON — By the time the first case of H1N1 novel influenza, often called “swine flu,” was confirmed in Minnesota April 29, people were already worried about the virus’s unusually high fatality rate and its inclination to strike young people as easily as elderly ones.
