Honored to serve: Fulda man among first in region to participate in D.C. trip for veterans FULDA — Two weeks ago, Raymond “Fritz” Heger stood in front of the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, located adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington, D.C. The memorial re-creates one of the most significant and recognizable images from World War II — the raising of the flag on top of Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima — but Heger didn’t need a statue or a photograph to remember the scene. He witnessed the flag-raising in person, on Feb. 23, 1945, from the deck of the USS Southampton (AKA 66).
