OKABENA — When the final buzzer sounded, the fans packing the stands in Okabena rose to their feet and showered the court with cheers. The cheerleaders paraded around the court with a congratulatory banner, and Southwest Star Concept girls’ basketball coach Les Knutson was awarded the game ball.
WORTHINGTON — While most of the area girls’ basketball teams have already played at least one game this season, all 12 of the Red Rock Conference squads will be in action tonight to kick off the league schedule with a full slate of six games.
SPRINGFIELD — With 27 points in the game, Red Rock Central’s Krystle Sell scored her 1,000th career point to lead the Falcons to a 74-47 victory against Springfield in a non-conference girls’ basketball game Tuesday night.
LUVERNE — Using a couple of late surges to win Games 1 and 3 before dominating in Game 4 Tuesday night, the top-seeded Windom Eagles claimed a four-game victory (25-20, 25-27, 25-20, 25-8) over fourth-seeded Southwest Star Concept in the semifinals of the Section 3A South volleyball tournament.
LUVERNE — Scoring the first four points in all three games Friday night, the fourth-seeded Southwest Star Concept Quasars earned quick leads in each set and swept fifth-seeded Red Rock Central (25-23, 25-19, 25-14) in the quarterfinals of the Section 3A South volleyball tournament in the Luverne Elementary gymnasium.
WORTHINGTON — Displaying lots of hustle and a balanced hitting attack, Worthington defeated a scrappy Southwest Star Concept (Heron Lake-Okabena) High School volleyball team Thursday night, three games to one, in the final match of the regular season for both squads.
The Trojans won Game 1 by six points, 25-19, but the hustling Quasars battled back and claimed victory in Game 2, 25-21.
Breaking from a slim 8-7 lead, Worthington went on a 12-2 run and opened up a commanding 20-9 lead, before posting a 25-18 win in Game 3.
Game 4 was the closest contest of the night, with several lead changes early and five tie scores late, but the Trojans prevailed, 25-23, to win the well-played match in four games.
SLAYTON — After dropping the first game of Tuesday night’s volleyball match, the Murray County Central Rebels rallied to win three tightly-contested sets in a row to claim a four-game victory over Southwest Star Concept (18-25, 25-22, 28-26, 25-20) and secure second place in the Red Rock Conference standings.
JEFFERS — Krystle Sell recorded her 1,000th career set assist Thursday night, and the Red Rock Central Falcons won a four-game thriller (25-27, 27-25, 27-25, 25-21) over the Fulda Raiders in Red Rock Conference volleyball action.
