MARSHALL — For more than a decade, one of the biggest highlights of each year for myself and two of my sons (Chad and Lucas) has been the two days of Section 3 boys’ basketball tournament action at the R/A Facility on the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University.
WORTHINGTON — From the soundtrack off the television movie “Eddie and the Cruisers,” the hit single “On the Dark Side,” by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band was No. 14 on Billboard’s Top 40 list, while the top four songs were “Caribbean Queen (Billy Ocean), “I Just Called To Say I Love You” (Stevie Wonder), “Purple Rain” (Prince) and “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” (Wham).
YORKTOWN, Va. — As Today’s Highlight in History (page A2) indicates, today is a “red letter” date in American History — for it was 228 years ago today, that British General Lord Charles Cornwallis surrendered his huge force of British troops to General George Washington, the Commander-in-Chief of America’s Continental Army.
LAKEFIELD — Last weekend, Windom draftee Jared Pick, a pitcher from the Luverne Redbirds, twirled a two-hit shutout to lead the Pirates to a 1-0 victory over the Moorhead Miners in an opening round game of the Class C State Amateur Baseball Tournament.
WORTHINGTON — Fifty years ago, as school was finishing in the last week of May in 1959, a couple of governors with similar names were making front-page news — and one area school was acting independently on the subject of time.
JEFFERS — In the mid-1960’s, an English rock band, known as the Dave Clark Five, had a song entitled “Everybody Knows.”
As the boys’ state high school basketball tournament is underway in Minneapolis and the Ellsworth Panthers are playing in the elite event for a fourth straight time — and their fifth in the past seven years — that song title could well apply to the type of representation that our area makes when an opportunity comes along.
WORTHNGTON — It has been an interesting two weeks since I wrote my last “blast” which featured an 18-point quiz.
While not many readers — just three — actually took the time to fully respond, I did receive lots of favorable comments about the column and did get a bunch of verbal answers to some of the questions.
WORTHINGTON — With the completion of last week’s state track and field meet, another year of high school sports — with the exception of this week’s state baseball tournament — has been successfully “tucked into the past.”
