Swimming ability can be critical in keeping water activities safe
WORTHINGTON — Last week, Brewster resident Jami Cummings saved two people from drowning in Lake Okabena during her lunch break. Meanwhile, in Plymouth, Worthington native Phil Geertsema and his wife, Jennifer, were would-be rescuers of two people in an apartment pool who were not so lucky; both died despite the Geertsemas’ heroic efforts.

Flexibility is an important part of strength training
WORTHINGTON — Most of us stretch our muscles because they are tight and we think they will become more flexible and it will prevent injuries. Stretching is meant to prepare the muscle for exercise and not to create injury during the course of it. Contrary to popular belief, stretching before a workout does not appear to decrease the occurrence of injury. The risk of injury seems to be about equal for those who stretch and those who do not stretch before exercise. The warm-up, not stretching, is more of an important deterrent for injury, when performed before an exercise bout.By Ryan Seykora , February 07, 2011
