Landmark trivia, challenges part of town’s 125th Anniversary bash
CHANDLER — Which Chandler landmark can be seen for miles? What building was used as the Red Cross Relief Center following the June 16, 1992, Chandler tornado? Where was the Chandler Lumber Co., once located?
If you can answer all of those questions, chances are you would have done pretty well in the Amazing Race Saturday afternoon during Chandler’s 125th Anniversary celebration.
CHANDLER — To mark 125 years of its existence, Chandler is hosting its own celebration this weekend. A big birthday party such as this only comes around every 25 years, so the city makes sure it has lasting appeal.
CHANDLER — The planning began back in April 2009, according to Doran Christoffels from the Chandler Economic Development Authority, but now the city’s 125th anniversary celebration seems right around the corner, he said.
Amundson served aboard USS Gambier Bay
CHANDLER — The USS Gambier Bay went down in history as the only American aircraft carrier to be sunk by gunfire during World War II. She remains at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean today, a victim of an Imperial Japanese Navy attack on Oct. 25, 1944.
CHANDLER — When the season opened, Mark Spitz was making a “splash” in the Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany and when the campaign was reaching its end — South Dakota Senator George McGovern was finishing up his campaign for the presidency.
Beginning today and through July 12, Pioneer Public Television will be replacing the entire digital transmission line on its tower near Chandler (KSMN-TV).
