Selected as the Southern Confederacy Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year and also earning a nod on the Associated Press first-team all-state squad as a defensive lineman, Edgerton/Ellsworth’s Johnny Menning was truly a force to be reckoned with from his defensive end position.
WORTHINGTON — The Minnesota Associated Press has released their 2011 All-State Football team. Edgerton/Ellsworth senior Johnny Menning was the lone first team all-state choice among area teams, making the team on the defensive line.
MINNEAPOLIS — The most important result of the 36-28 victory for Edgerton/Ellsworth over Wheaton/Herman-Norcross Friday morning at the Metrodome may not have been the fact the Flying Dutchmen put the finishing touches on a perfect season or even the hoisting of the state trophy.
It could be that, after 104 days, E/E running back Devin Hulstein is finally going to shave.
MINNEAPOLIS — Edgerton/Ellsworth quarterback Isaac Heard should probably send the Minnesota Vikings his resume because he has arguably played better at the Metrodome this year than any other quarterback, whether it be pro or high school.
MINNEAPOLIS — It’s not often you can knock your coach down and get away with it. Edgerton/Ellsworth running back Blake Jouwstra did just that to coach Andrew Fleischman with his go-ahead touchdown catch with 8:30 left in the state championship game versus Wheaton/Herman-Norcross.
Edgerton/Ellsworth linebacker Derek Voge rose Friday afternoon from the Metrodome turf on Wheaton/Herman-Norcross’ 34-yard line, holding the football fumbled by Warriors wide receiver Brock Sweere as if there was nothing more important on this earth. With three seconds left in the Class 9-man state championship game and the Flying Dutchmen leading by eight points, there wasn’t.
The ball belonged to Voge and, after a kneel down by Edgerton/Ellsworth, the state title belonged to the Flying Dutchmen with a 36-28 win.
EDGERTON — Seven seniors will play their last high school football game for Edgerton/Ellsworth when the Flying Dutchmen take the field in the state title game versus Wheaton/Herman-Norcross at 10 a.m. Friday at the Metrodome.
EDGERTON — The offensive line of DC Claar, Austin DeJong, Austin Mertens and Johnny Menning for Edgerton/Ellsworth’s football team average about 192.5 pounds. Don’t judge a book by its cover and don’t judge an offensive line by its size.
MINNEAPOLIS — The last time Dean Verdoes saw his beloved Edgerton High School represented in a state tournament, he was celebrating a state championship as a starter on the legendary 1960 basketball team that made Edgerton the smallest school ever to win the Minnesota basketball boys’ state championship.
