Recent ice storm inspires theme of ‘sticking’ together
ELLSWORTH —For the second year in a row, the McDermott Family Carnival will return to the Ellsworth Family Fun Days celebration this weekend, promising a bigger and better Midway, complete with a Ferris Wheel, Tilt-a-Whirl and perhaps even a giant slide.
SLAYTON —Murray County Central senior Jack Thony enjoyed a Jesse Owens-type of day Thursday, as he earned four gold medals in the Sub-Section 10 (Section 3A, Sub-Region 2) high school track and field meet.
Thony won all three sprints 100-meter dash (10.95), 200 (22.26) and 400 (51.09), while also placing first in the long jump (20 feet, three inches) to complete a perfect day and score 40 points for the Rebels.
A lot of people complain about living in a small town. Nothing to do, everybody knows your business, teenagers running around. But after the icy storm April 10 and snowstorm on the 11th, they change their minds.
Ellsworth battling water woes; other communities strive to return to normalcy
WORTHINGTON — Area counties are hard at work cleaning up fallen limbs and trees following this week’s ice storm and snowstorm, and power companies continue reducing the number of residents without electricity.
SLAYTON – Displaying remarkable depth and winning a total of 15 events – eight in girls’ competition and seven in the boys’ meet – Worthington claimed both team titles Friday at the season’s first outdoor high school track and field meet, hosted by Murray County Central.
WORTHINGTON — Eric Talsma score a game-high 22 points, including 16 in the first half, to power the Southwest Christian Eagles to a 79-45 victory over the Ellsworth Panthers in a Class A Boys’ Basketball Section 3 Southern Division quarterfinal game Saturday.
EDGERTON — Nick Reyne scored on a driving layup with 1.3 seconds left in the game to lift the No. 11 Adrian Dragons past the No. 6 Edgerton Flying Dutchmen in the opening round of the Class A Section 3 Southern Division Boys’ Basketball tournament Thursday.
WORTHINGTON — Amber Walkowaik topped 1,000 career points as the Ellsworth Panthers girls’ basketball season came to an end with a 75-48 loss to the No. 1-seed Wabasso Rabbits in the first Section 3A South quarterfinal game of four played on “Super Saturday” at Worthington High School.
ELLSWORTH — Hills-Beaver Creek’s Jeff Sandbulte produced 30 points, seven rebounds and five assists to lead the Patriots to a 69-58 Red Rock Conference boys basketball victory over the Ellsworth Panthers Friday night.
OKABENA – Scoring 27 points Thursday, Southwestern United sophomore Courtney Place surpassed the 1,000-point mark in her stellar varsity career and paced the Wildcats to a dominating 72-35 victory over Madelia in an opening round Section 2A South high school girls basketball game.
The victory advances seventh-seeded SWU to the tournament quarterfinals and a clash with No. 2 Granada-Huntley-East Chain (13-6) at East Chain Tuesday.
