U.S. 1st Congressional District sees changes
ST. PAUL — Minnesota’s best-known U.S. House member will seek re-election in a district where she does not live and its top-ranking federal representative will run in slightly less friendly territory after a five-judge panel on Tuesday redrew congressional district lines.
Rebuffed in his attempt to become governor of Iowa and overturn through executive order the Iowa Supreme Court’s decision legalizing gay marriage in the state, Bob Vander Plaats set his sights on leading the effort to remove three court justices who faced retention votes. Their defeat became his obsession.
Terry Branstad, who served as Iowa’s governor from 1983 to 1999, is once again a candidate for that office, and he made news last week by suggesting replacement of the state’s judicial selection system.
